Video - Teron Gorefiend (Offtime)

Teron Gorefiend

This didn't take that long for us to learn and we all had to play a hunter for a moment, if they were chosen for Shadow of Death we were safe. Those that weren't familiar with pet-bars soon became obvious but we got there in the end. Practice is all it took.

First kill was fun and we also used the encounter to guage our dps numbers for when we started working on brutallus in sunwell as it was an 'all out' fight. One of my favourites for sure.

Video was fun to make and on this kill I wasn't chosen to die (probably a good thing), a few have asked me for the soundtrack and I have no idea what it was called, I made this a few reinstalls ago and no longer have the Sony Vegas work files to find out. Its in my mp3 collection.. Somewhere..

It was around this time I had a rl schedule change and could no longer raid with offtime. After a few weeks of no raiding I started to miss it, knowing the guild was progressing through Black Temple without me the only option I had at the time was transfer, as there were no aussie guilds on the server. Leaving my alt there I tried out a Singapore which was the same timezone as me at the time. Very different atmosphere than I was used to but I stuck it out. Theyd had T6 content all on farm for several months and it was a change of pace. First night I had to learn quite quickly every boss from Teron Gorefiend upwards as they plowed through the instance. Seemed too easy, there as no vent chatter and apart from the learning curve, got quite boring and I began to miss raiding with offtime. I did make some friends there and one I still chat with regularly on MSN today so it kept me raiding.

Using 'find' to search for specific files in Linux (basic)

This was more of a cheat card for myself but figured others might find it useful too.

Searching in Nautilus can be sketchy and while 'locate  ' works fine sometimes I need to be more specific when looking for a particular file to narrow down the search results.

The 'find' command is quite powerful, but tricky to commit to memory when you don't use it often.

find (starting_directory) (test) (options) (match_criteria) (actions_to_perform_on_results)

Find all "jpg" files starting at filesystem's root

find . -name "*.jpg"

nb. find / -name \*jpg does the same thing, escape the wildcard character * and saves typing quotes.

Find directories (-type d):

find . -type d

Find a specific directory

find . -type d -name \Pictures

Use -iname instead of -name to ignore case.

Search multiple directories:

find /usr /etc /var/www -iname \index.html

To filter out permission errors add 2>/dev/null to the end of the line.

Search for symbolic links -type l

There are many more advanced switches which I'll add later if needed, this is just to explain basic searching.

Hyjal Summit

Rage Winterchill

ssrage

Our first raid in Hyjal was definately a change of scenery, having lived in TK and SSC attuning members and longing to leave T5 content behind us I may have reconsidered.  Waves and waves of trash until a boss pull was even more of a headache initially than I'd read about.  We quickly learned to love our Prot paladin Lucianas which started to make this trivial once the dps coordinated themselves. As we geared up it got a lot easier. First boss was Rage winterchill which was a reflex check really. A bit of a change of pace from T5 as dps the only fail test was using our PvP trinkets before we got killed. I remember the guild being asked to pvp to raid, many didn't like it but the trinkets were worth it.  Think we got Rage down on the first raid, everyone was very excited.

Attempted on the next raid from memory, once the tanks did their thing and people moved when targeted it was pretty easy. I don't have any more footage of us in Mount Hyjal as it was around this time RL tore me away from raiding for a while. I kept in touch with the guild and looked forward to playing again, it wasn't until they were on Illidan I was able to return but it was good to see progression still going strong.

The Eye - Kael'Thas

Footage of a full raid through Tempest Keep's - The Eye 25man raid in The Burning Crusade.  Highlights of each boss but the majority on Kael'Thas the final encounter in this dungeon.  Probably one of the biggest buzzes I've had from the game was killing this guy, Offtime spent weeks, maybe a couple of months working on him and it all came together. I still think it's more difficult than Illidan in TBC, I didn't get the same rush as I did getting this guy.

Anyway, it got us into T6 content in Hyjal and BT, which was pretty huge for us at the time.  We downed him for several weeks as we needed to attune a lot of people as numbers for Hyjal/BT were low, and he refused to drop Conqueror !

Good times.

More DOTS !!

First kill of High Astromancer Solarian in The Eye raid in Tempest Keep. Borrowed the mp3 of the famous Onyxia wipe in an attempt to make it look like our raid, was a lot of fun to make and one of my first raid videos, also my first kill with my new guild Offtime.  Good times.

Java error while installing extensions in OpenOffice 3

The OpenOffice 3 error “Could not create java implementation loader” while installing extensions on Ubuntu can be fixed by deleting the following file :

javasettings_Linux_x86.xml
in ~/.openoffice.org/3/user/config

Building and installing ProjectM visualizer (Milkdrop for linux) in Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10

This didn't take as much mucking around as previous Ubuntu's. There's a great How To on ubuntuforums.com for Hardy, which works for Intrepid with just a couple of tweaks.

This is based on a post I made there adapting the method for Intrepid which worked fine for myself.
ProjectM is basically the linux version of the Milkdrop Visualization plugin for Winamp. It will work with any player as it uses the pulseaudio driver. Some players use the libvisual library for visualizations such as Amarok which allow even better integration. I use Exaile so ProjectM needs to be launched manually whenever I want to see visualizations.

First download some deps
sudo aptitude install libglew1.5 libglew1.5-dev ftgl-dev libpulse-dev subversion cmake libvisual-0.4-dev libsdl-dev libqt4-dev build-essential

Create a local folder and download the ProjectM svn from sourceforge.
cd ~
mkdir projectm
cd projectm
svn co https://projectm.svn.sf.net/svnroot/projectm/trunk projectM-Trunk

cd projectM-Trunk/src
ccmake .

Now cmake will load. Press "c" to configure ProjectM. Highlight the CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE field, press enter and type "Release" there. Press enter again. Then highlight the CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX field and change /usr/local to /usr/. Then press "c" again to configure it with those parameters.

I had some warnings that looked like

CMake Warning (dev) at projectM-libvisual/CMakeLists.txt:14 (ADD_DEFINITIONS):
Policy CMP0005 is not set: Preprocessor definition values are now escaped
automatically. Run "cmake --help-policy CMP0005" for policy details. Use
the cmake_policy command to set the policy and suppress this warning.
This warning is for project developers. Use -Wno-dev to suppress it.

I went on anyway.

First make failed but this fix got things on track.
cd libprojectM
gedit Renderer.hpp

then edit lines 28-30 from this:
#include <FTGL/FTGL.h>
#include <FTGL/FTGLPixmapFont.h>
#include <FTGL/FTGLExtrdFont.h>

to this: (changing case and commenting out two lines)

#include <FTGL/ftgl.h>
/**#include <FTGL/FTGLPixmapFont.h> */
/**#include <FTGL/FTGLExtrdFont.h> */

After this, exit gedit.

Now cmake . worked
cd ..
cmake .
make

now the make succeeds, and you can proceed with
sudo make install

projectM-pulseaudio should be in (Menu -> Sound and Video)
or cli
projectM-pulseaudio

This worked recently with svn revision 1198 on Intrepid, this was taken from a post of mine on ubuntuforums.com with credit to 'sammydee' for the initial Hardy How To and 'lamelos' for a codefix.
